quiet brink

what was it i felt today
brought back from some quiet brink
a hand firm gentle unexpectedly there
something melted merged in a caring
that took my breath away

when i couldn't see past the blur
when everything seemed to fade
who offered that hand
held me in an embrace
of concerned caring
not shown but felt in so many ways

what dam broke flooding
everything, drowning my voice
and as i blindly tried to swim
through the pain like abandonment
tired, heart heavy with grief
who dived in uncaring of themselves
breathing in hope, willing
that extra effort to the shore..

eyes that were there, watching
knowing i would make it
somewhere realizing the darkness
piercing the mist reaching out
in that one moment of hopelessness
the comfort of a steady heartbeat
in protective assurance
hushing the choked sob within

with just your presence, you take away
the chill.. and warmth is all i feel
a whisper silently echoes in my heart
amidst the fragrance of such love
through this misty haze filling
up my eyes, distorting each image
only one clarity emerges - Us....
